You can start working without a National Insurance number, however, you may already hold one. You can complete and send the CA5403, which wwe can use to trace your national insurance number. If you do not have one, once you return to the UK you can apply by going to Apply for a National Insurance number

If you have done this and received your own National Insurance number, you will need to tell your employer your correct National Insurance number. For the current tax year (06/04/2023 to 05/04/2024) your employer will be able to amend any submissions they have made incorrectly.

If you have access to your Personal tax account: sign in or set up then you can print off a National Insurance Contributions Letter yourself. If you don’t have access to your PTA then you may wish to call our National Insurance Helpline on 0300 200 3500 and they will arrange for a Letter to be issued to you. Thank you.
